The Playboy of the Western World

Bring your playboy or playgirl to see the riotously funny drama “The Playboy of the Western World” at Moraine Valley Community College March 4-6, and stay at the nearby and affordable Best Western Inn Suites Midway Hotel!

The great playwright J.M. Synge’s classic, “The Playboy of the Western World” tells the story of a small village in Ireland, the peace of which is broken by the arrival of a stranger, a young man who spins an outrageous tale of how he murdered his father. The village girls love this romantic and rambunctious braggart—or course! The parents are not so happy. The boy’s story falls apart in hilarious fashion, when the “murdered” father shows up. This is Irish storytelling at its best!

“The Playboy of the Western World” debuted in Dublin in 1907. The audience, accustomed to romantic speech and poetic theatre, rioted, just as at the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” in 1913. Theatre and music were breaking away from the classical mode and taking on “modern” themes both universal and about “common people.” Today, “The Playboy of the Western World” is considered one of the greatest comedies ever written.
