Screwball Comedy “Harvey”

Just for laughs, bring the family to see the screwball comedy “Harvey,” at the Moraine Valley Community College February 19-22, and stay at the nearby and affordable Best Western Inn Suites Midway Hotel!

“Harvey” is a six foot, three-and-a-half inch rabbit, albeit invisible (Harvey is a “pooka,” a mischievous character from Celtic mythology who is fond of social outcasts), and friend to Elwood P. Dowd, an affable gentleman who likes to drink and who sees what his bewildered sister Vera and niece Myrtle Mae can’t see. When he “introduces” Harvey to Vera’s society friends, she decides to put him in a home for mentally challenged people. Hilarity ensues as the doctors at the home decide that Vera is the crazy one and Elwood is a perfectly normal man reacting to society by retreating into his imagination. “Well, I’ve wrestled with reality for thirty-five years, Doctor, and I’m happy to state I finally won out over it.”

“Harvey,” written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright May Chase, was a smash hit on Broadway and made into the 1950 classic screwball comedy film starring Jimmy Stewart, Josephine Hall (she won the Academy Award for her performance) and a cast of wonderful character actors.
