Get your Irish up and bring the family to Heritage and Harvest Day at Chicago Gaelic Park in Oak Forest, Sunday, September 14 and stay at the nearby and affordable Best Western Inn Suites Midway Hotel!
Heritage and Harvest Day celebrates Ireland’s farming past. You will see a working threshing mill, the churning of milk and many more old time farming practices. Enjoy horse jumping, a display of antique tractors, farm animals from Lally’s Farm, apple bobbing, an apple pie making competition and. . . uh, wellie wanging (grownups tossing their Wellington boots off their feet and over their heads). Experience the making of sugan (we have no idea what that is) and the piking of straw.
There will be games for all ages, including a straw pillow fight, a three-legged race, a sack race, a barrel race, water balloon tossing and lots more! Youth hurling (the game, not throwing up) and football demonstrations start at 11 am. And of course, Irish music and dancing will rule the day, featuring an exhibition by the Cross Keys School of Irish Dancing.
Food and beverages will be served, including barbeque ribs, hot dogs, ice cream and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
