Chicago Cubs Take On The Arizona Diamond Backs

With a rich sports culture, the city of Chicago is represented in almost every national sports league.  In the NFL, Chicago is represented by the Bears who became an NFL team in 1919 and boast one Super Bowl win.  In the NHL, Chicago has the Blackhawks who have been a part of Chicago since 1926 and have claimed the Stanley Cup on four separate occasions.  In the NBA, the Windy City is represented by the Chicago Bulls, a team which was founded in 1966 and has seen victory in the NBA championships no fewer than six times.

Perhaps Chicago’s greatest love, however, also happens to be America’s favorite pastime, baseball.   The city of Chicago so loves the sport, that one Major Leagues Baseball team could not do the city’s love of the game justice.  Instead, the city of Chicago is home to two Major League Baseball teams; the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs.  The White Sox were incorporated into Major League Baseball in 1900 and have brought home three World Series wins.  While the White Sox are a formidable force within the MLB, the Chicago Cubs are famous for another reason.

Though the Chicago Cubs have brought the city of Chicago two World Series victories, and one tie since becoming a team in 1870, the MLB team has been in a bit of a rut when it comes to winning anything lately.  In fact,  the little rut that the Cubs have found themselves in has lasted 104 years and counting.  This makes the Chicago Cubs World Series losing streak the longest of any American professional sports team.  Still, Chicagoans love their baseball team, and flock to Wrigley Field to root, root, root for the home team.

The Chicago Cubs

As one of the MLB’s oldest teams and the only team to play continuously in the same city, the Chicago Cubs enjoy a long history of greatness.  Having tasted victory in 1907 and 1908, the Chicago Cubs of the past cemented themselves as a force to be reckoned with inside Major League Baseball.  Lead by heavy hitters and greats such as Cap Anson, Albert Spalding, and Larry Corcoran, players for the Chicago Cubs are a staple within the Baseball Hall of Fame in New York.

In 2008, the Chicago Cubs celebrated their 10,000th regular season win at home in Wrigley Field.  The Chicago Cubs are the second MLB team to achieve this monumental milestone and only the San Francisco Giants accomplished the feat before them.  The Cubs franchise, however, is the only one to accomplish 10,000 regular season wins while residing in a single city.

To celebrate their 10,000th regular season win, an extra white flag with “10,000” flew proudly next to Wrigley Field’s customary W flag.

Chicago Cubs and the World Series

The year was 1908 the last time the Chicago Cubs clinched the MLB World Series title.  Since that year, the Cubs have appeared in the World Series eight times, and each time, they have walked away beaten.  This 104 year losing streak makes it the longest in any of the four American professional sports leagues.  More embarrassingly, perhaps, the last time the Chicago Cubs appeared in the World Series finals, the National Basketball Association was still not in existence.  The long running World Series drought has lead to the Chicago Cubs having the unfortunate nickname, the Loveable Losers.

The 2013 MLB season has seen the Chicago Cubs get going with a great start much to the delight of sports fans and supporters of the Cubs franchise.  Their success, of late, has many wondering if this much loved baseball team might finally break that 104 year losing streak.  Coming in the month of May are home games against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks will be in town to face the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field from May 31st until June 2nd.  Whether you are a Cubs fan, a D-Backs fan, or just want to enjoy America’s pastime, a Chicago Cubs game against rivals, the Arizona Diamondbacks, is not to be missed.
